A very limited palette. Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue were the main color elements for this painting. I added Alizarin Crimson at the end to get the deepest darks, I might have also picked up a little bit of Burnt Sienna (my palette tends to get a little sloppy). I piled on the lights with my knife.
This is my last sketch for a few days, I am heading home for Christmas tomorrow.

I have decided to bump my prices in 2012. Costs have gone way up and my sale are sluggish, kinda/just like like the the economy... I think it might be better for my ego to be not selling at higher prices. I may try ebay but I'm not sure yet.. it might cancel out all of the ego gains from the higher priced non-sales.

I held this painting to work on for a few days because I just couldn't decide if it was done. I think part of my reluctance to call it complete has to do with the surface I worked on. I recently purchased several types of boards from Raymar and this was my first painting on their Double Oil Primed Belgian Linen. I love it! It is my all time favorite surface. Unfortunately, it is more expensive than any of the other choices...I have nine more linen boards left, I will either use them up immediately or jealously hoard them.

I used a photograph I took a few weeks ago as reference for this sketch. I am not a fan of using photo reference for my work. It isn't an aesthetic issue, it's that after years working as an illustrator, it feels too much like work used to. I rarely do any preliminary drawing before painting but after a futile start on this picture I had to scrub the panel down and do a quick drawing and it helped quite a bit.
I also used Maroger Medium. I have known of this oil medium for years but only just purchased a tube. I'm unsure of how it should be used but plan on experimenting with it for awhile.

Every morning, afternoon and evening I walk my dog in this park. After my limited palette attempts I think I probably overstated the color and value here but it feels right to me.
On a separate subject, today is the eight week anniversary since my last cigarette! I think I may finally be getting past the tense, clenched teeth, clenched fists phase.

I used one of the photos from my recent trip to Plymouth Colony as reference.I tried to paint this outside of my comfort zone. My palette consisted of Yellow Ochre, Cad Red Medium, Ivory Black and Titanium White for the majority of the painting and then at the very end of the painting I dipped into Ultramarine Blue. Lastly, after I blocked in the painting I switched from brushes to palette knife for the rest of the painting.

I started this painting a few days ago before work. It had a pretty good start and I was looking forward to returning this morning to finish it. Thanksgiving morning in Dallas was more like London in a horror film...dense fog everywhere. I didn't want to waste the morning so I painted a small sketch in the park and then went home to play with this painting. While painting I listened to "Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie which led me to Peter, Paul and Mary to Judy Collins to The Seekers to John Denver to Bob Dylan and then back to Arlo Guthrie and the "City of New Orleans" hence "Good Morning America...". The sentiment fit the location and the lyric fit my life over these past 7 years.

I purchased this chair at a thrift store when I moved to Dallas. I chose this one because it looked clean and, mostly because I could pick it up (which is important if you are going to have to move furniture by yourself). I got it home, set it in place and sat down on it and, uh oh... it was tiny. The seat cushion is only 16 inches from the floor. I sat on so many chairs at the store. I never noticed that I hadn't sat on this one. It is so uncomfortable that I can't really sit in it for more than a few minutes. Maddie seems to love it though.

At first Livi told me not to cut off my hair. She said it was my only asset (only a daughter can get away with that). After cutting her hair, the hospital barber offered to cut mine as well...Livi tearfully said no, her "older sister was a dog groomer and would do it" (again, only a daughter could get away with that!). That night Caroline came over with her dog clippers and cut my hair...Tina just watched and laughed when she wasn't horrified.

I am back from a long absense. I spent the month of September in Ohio with my family. My daughter Olivia had a brain surgery that will end her epilepsy related seizures. All went perfectly and she is doing great. We spent the week prior to the surgery together painting and sketching. She would pick the subject and I would paint it and then she would add a brushstroke or two at the end to finish it up. It was a special time that I will always treasure. This is one of the paintings we collaborated on. More to come. Also there are a few from a research trip to southern New England for the project I'm working on.

I was asked to do a plein air painting demonstration for the Art Department at ReelFX animation studio. I have done demo's before and it can be a little bit nerve wracking. Doing one in front of a group of highly skilled and talented artists had me a little more than anxious and very intimidated. I suggested Central Square Park as a location for its close proximity and to make sure I was off studio property where the group would hopefully be smaller. The demonstration was scheduled for Monday, then moved to Wednesday. I went to the park after work on Tuesday to scout it out and do this "warm up" sketch.

I used a pretty minimal palette; Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Cad Yellow Med., Ult. Blue, and a tiny bit of Cad. Red Med. This was a fun exercise.

I had set up my easel and was almost half way through my sketch when a policeman came up behind me. He asked me what I was doing, the easel, the painting, the brush in my hand somehow didn't register with him. As my friend Rick said, "he won't be making Detective anytime soon". Well it seems that I was painting on property belonging to the Meadows Foundation, specifically the Dallas Preservation Society and had to leave. They were closed and I was less than 20 feet from the sidewalk, it didn't matter. I scraped down my incomplete sketch and went home. I needed to calm down and this quiet scene in my apartment did the trick for me.

Well, it's been awhile and I have begun my new adventure. I am in Dallas, Texas. Today was my first day at the ReelFX studio. I will be working on their first animated feature film. The studio is very cool and I met a bunch of great artists. It is a visual feast with beautiful art everywhere. I am very excited to be a part of their team.

This painting is the third of three sketches I painted on Sunday. The plan was to just "push" some paint around to get back into the swing of it. Unfortunately the results are what I expected. There just isn't any other way to work the rust out. Hopefully good works to come soon.

...the fact that I have past the 500th post on this blog, which means I have finally completed 500 daily plein air paintings. Not to pat myself on the back too much but, I am extremely proud of this achievement. Along with my plein air painting, I work full time and maintain a freelance illustration/animation business. Although it has often been exhausting, it has been a tremendous learning experience and loads of fun. One thing that I'm sure most of the daily painters have in common is family support. That is certainly the case for me, none of this would or could have happened without the loving support of Kathi and our 3 daughters who inspire everything.

This painting is from Sunday when the weather was stunning, very unlike the gray, windy and wet weather we had today. Painting a white house on a bright sunny day is like skipping the meal and going right for the dessert.

I find it a little confusing when I read the dimensions of a painting on the internet. I was taught that you start with the vertical measurement, followed by the horizontal measurement (this was long before computers and the internet). It seems in the digital world it is the other way around. When posting a digital image of a traditional oil painting, which way is the correct way?
I'll stick with my way!

I really expected this to be an easy picture to paint...it wasn't! When I looked into the shadow my eyes adjusted and everything in the light just washed out and I rushed to re-paint everything. When I looked at the background, my eyes re-adjusted and everything in shadow fell into blackness so, I rushed to re-paint everything again. Finally I squinted and re-painted it once again. This painting is 11 x 14, oil on a canvas panel.
