Home From The Beach
Several years ago I was a Background Painter on the film, "Lilo and Stitch". As was the case with each film I worked on, we had a period of time for "ramping up". Usually this was to become familiar with the style of the film. On "Lilo" it was also to learn how to paint animation backgrounds in watercolor, something that hadn't been done at Disney in many decades. Part of the "ramp up" process was to go out and paint on location with watercolor. This painting is one of my "ramp up" sketches. I will be posting a few others this week as well as uploading others to my eBay auctions. I will also be auctioning some of my baseball card paintings and lithograph and other Disney memorabilia from my 10 years at the studio.
I hope to get back to posting new paintings as soon as I get out from under my current work load.

Monday, Rain Storm

Mourning in this Small Town
As I was walking around this small town, trying to decide where to set up my easel, I realized that every business but one was shut down or boarded up. The gas station was out of business, even the one traffic light didn't work. It was a town that died. During the 2 hours I was there, I saw one man ride by on his bicycle. And yet every local politician has put posters on the utility poles.

The Box Car in Light and Shadow - SOLD
There was something about this abandoned restaurant in the late afternoon light that I couldn't resist. I am attracted to the character of this old boarded up building and the proximity of the tracks added to it. It was almost like being on a movie set.

Morning Sun on the Hillside
I came across this hillside at 8:30 this morning. I loved the bright intense sunlight hitting it and the contrast of the shaded road, which also provided a comfortable spot to paint from.

Brownsboro Pasture
The last painting of the day. I loved the color of the light from the low sun. It was quiet and peaceful, a perfect ending to a great day.
Afternoon in the Valley - SOLD
A great afternoon. The shadows were getting longer and the distant hills were a beautiful blue violet.

Tennessee Valley Farm - SOLD
I spent the entire day exploring and painting in the Tennessee Valley. This was a productive and fun day. The valley and the surrounding mountains are beautiful and I will be painting there often.

A Shady Place
The heat was oppressive today and I was happy for even the little bit of relief I found in the shade of this tree. Some passages of this painting are more sculptural than painted as I piled on paint as quickly as I could.

Wade In - SOLD

Morning Comes Softly - Available
The soft gold colored light is what attracted me to paint this. There was a mist rising from the field in the distance that added a timeless quality to the scene.

Saturday Sunrise 1 - SOLD
The Sunrise paintings were painted on an access road alongside a highway. I began painting at almost the first hint of light in the sky. I was guessing at the color because I could really only see values on my palette (a good reason to always lay out your color in the same order). After about 15 or 20 min. the light had changed so much that I took out a second canvas, made a quarter turn to the right and began a second painting. I could now see my color better and already had piles of color from the first painting. I love doing these shorthand, speed studies, no time to think, just react. Total fun.
