Figure Two

14x11 oil on canvas panel.
This is my second try at painting from the model. Even though this is from the Thursday night figure painting group, it is the same model I painted with the Sunday afternoon group. I feel pretty good about the progress from the first to the second paintings and can clearly see some areas I need to focus on during the next attempt.

Figure One

11x14 oil on canvas panel.
I have been absent from blogging lately but, not from painting. I joined several figure drawing groups and figure painting groups and this is my first attempt with the Sunday painting group. What a struggle! I am determined to continue and hopefully learn and improve along the way.

Connected - SOLD

11x14 oil on canvas board.
I made two trips to this location. The painting was ok after the first session but I felt I could improve it with one more go. I think it worked.

The First Biker - SOLD

8x10 oil on canvas board.
By the time I finished this sketch the street was full of motorcycles. They had just opened their brand new back patio and the party was in full swing. I noticed on the drive home that I was humming, "one bourbon, one shot and one beer".

Sunday at the Lake

8x10 oil on canvas board.
A very pleasant morning at White Rock Lake. I was drawn to this spot with the willow growing right across the river and the lake beyond.

Deep Ellum - SOLD

9x12 oil on canvas board.
I had dinner on Friday evening in Deep Ellum with two co-workers and knew I had to paint there. Saturday morning I returned to try and capture a bit of the neighborhood and a bit of the Dallas skyline.

Peaceful Afternoon / SERENITY NOW!

10x10 oil on canvas board.
I had set up my easel and was almost half way through my sketch when a policeman came up behind me. He asked me what I was doing, the easel, the painting, the brush in my hand somehow didn't register with him. As my friend Rick said, "he won't be making Detective anytime soon". Well it seems that I was painting on property belonging to the Meadows Foundation, specifically the Dallas Preservation Society and had to leave. They were closed and I was less than 20 feet from the sidewalk, it didn't matter. I scraped down my incomplete sketch and went home. I needed to calm down and this quiet scene in my apartment did the trick for me.

Sometimes it makes sense to go back to the basics when you are struggling. Red, Yellow and Blue are the basic DNA of all color...or so I've been taught

Dallas Morning - SOLD

6x8 oil on canvas board
This is the last of my Sunday morning sketches. It was actually the second sketch of the morning but for some reason I posted it third...?

Overpass in the Morning - SOLD

6x8 oil on canvas board
This is the first sketch from Sunday morning. My goal was to paint 2 sketches in 60 minutes. In the end I only spent 40 minutes on the 2, partly because the results were less than satisfying and also I wanted breakfast.
This is a view from my apartment building. I think that is the 75 overpass in front of a portion of the Dallas skyline.

On Ramp

8x10 oil on canvas board.
Well, it's been awhile and I have begun my new adventure. I am in Dallas, Texas. Today was my first day at the ReelFX studio. I will be working on their first animated feature film. The studio is very cool and I met a bunch of great artists. It is a visual feast with beautiful art everywhere. I am very excited to be a part of their team.

This painting is the third of three sketches I painted on Sunday. The plan was to just "push" some paint around to get back into the swing of it. Unfortunately the results are what I expected. There just isn't any other way to work the rust out. Hopefully good works to come soon.

One Last Swing in the South -

Daily Painting, Landscape, Tire Swing, Tree, Farmhouse, Alabama, Tennessee

12x16" oil on a canvas panel.
This has been one of the most hectic weeks I have ever had!
I have had work each day and freelance each evening and preparing for another move in between. I had a small break on my freelance assignment over the weekend and took a personal break from my packing to paint. This subject seemed to fit my mood perfectly. The nostalgia of an old tire swing and my very last painting in Tennessee/Alabama. I am bound for home in Ohio for awhile and then I am off to..................................................................my next adventure.

Hay 4 Sisyphus -

Daily Painting, Landscape, Hay Barrels, Hill, Tennessee Valley

8 x 10" oil on a canvas panel.
The task of rolling these hay barrels up the hill led me to the title, that and...
...the fact that I have past the 500th post on this blog, which means I have finally completed 500 daily plein air paintings. Not to pat myself on the back too much but, I am extremely proud of this achievement. Along with my plein air painting, I work full time and maintain a freelance illustration/animation business. Although it has often been exhausting, it has been a tremendous learning experience and loads of fun. One thing that I'm sure most of the daily painters have in common is family support. That is certainly the case for me, none of this would or could have happened without the loving support of Kathi and our 3 daughters who inspire everything.
Happy St. Valentines day to my family.

Running Before and After the Fall -

Daily Painting, wooden still life

Almost immediately after I "blocked" this picture in, the cardboard that I had clipped the background paper to...fell over. Everything was scattered, so this wooden man was running before he fell and then again after the fall.

Tree, House -

Daily Painting, Tree, White House, North Alabama

This painting is from Sunday when the weather was stunning, very unlike the gray, windy and wet weather we had today. Painting a white house on a bright sunny day is like skipping the meal and going right for the dessert.
This painting is 8" x 10", oil on a canvas panel.
