The Keep Out Wall -

Daily Suburban Painting, houses,backyards,wall

One of my favorite thoughts about walls is by Randy Pausch. It goes something like this "the wall isn't there to keep you out...it's there to keep out those that don't want in as much as you".
I didn't go into this backyard, I just peeked in, and painted.

Linger and Loiter -

Daily Landscape Painting, river, Athens, Alabama, rocks, branch

The river "Lingers", and then moves on, the rocks just "Loiter". I debated putting in the branch but when the sunlight shone through a couple of leaves the debate was over.

Brook Chatter - SOLD

I completed two paintings at this location. My first brushstrokes were in the bright foamy water. Everything else was "keyed" down off of that.

Red Hat, Purple Flowers and... SOLD

Daily Painting, Still Life, Floral, Red Hat, Spring Flowers, Robin's Egg

...a Robin's egg. A co-worker found this egg on the lawn at our office and I talked him into loaning it to me for a painting. I don't think any other color says spring quite like Robin's egg blue. This set up has the same flowers as yesterday but, under a bright incandescent bulb. The set up yesterday was under a fluorescent bulb with a warm bulb in a clip on light from below.

A Brook -

Daily Landscape Painting,The Brook,Tennyson,Tennessee Valley,

Whenever I come upon a stream or brook, I am reminded of the Alfred Lord Tennyson poem. This seemed a connection to good to pass... a brook in Tennessee and Tennyson's "The Brook".

Ridge Road -

Daily painting, Pisgah Ridge, Franklin Hayes Rd.,Tennessee

The third of my sketches on Pisgah Ridge. I will be returning soon...I left my dogs leash tied to a tree there. I usually let Annie (my dog) roam and explore but, I set up too close to the road and she kept wandering down to it.
There were cows in the field across the road when I started but...they refused to pose when I got to that part of the painting.

The House on the Ridge -

Daily Painting, Farm House, Maple Tree, Spring Light and Shadow,Front Porch

The second of my paintings on Pisgah Ridge. I had a blast painting this, it was a perfect, clear, spring day.
I found a wonderful surprise while visiting Belinda Del Pesco's blog this morning. Check it out!

Barn on the Ridge -

Daily Landscape Oil Painting, Barn, Pisgah Ridge, Tennessee

I found this beautiful property on Pisgah Ridge in Tennessee. I started with the barn, then the house and then a view down the road.
I really like this painting but unfortunately the photo of it is terrible. I always seem to have problems when photographing paintings that are predominately green, dark paintings give me trouble too. I will have to figure this out soon...it's spring and green is everywhere.

Late Afternoon in Paint Rock -

Daily Landscape Oil Painting, Paint Rock Preserve, Barn, Tree, Alabama

This is the sketch I painted without the benefit of a tripod to mount my paintbox on. I held the box with one hand and painted with the other...very awkward.

Paint Rock Barn - 1

Daily Landscape Oil Painting, Barn,Paint Rock Preserve,Alabama

I will begin offering paintings for sale again, starting with this painting.
This is the first of two paintings I completed at the Paint Rock Preserve. The goal was to keep it simple and graphic and I think I accomplished that. I don't know what sort of farm equipment that is but I loved the color of it against the gray barn and green grass.

Afternoon in the Valley - 3

Daily Landscape Oil Painting, Gurly, AL, Tennessee Valley

The third of my sketches in Gurly, Alabama. Tomorrow I will be posting the first of two sketches of the barn at the Paint Rock Preserve. Tonight after work I drove out to the Preserve to paint. When I got there I discovered that I had left my tripod at home. It is very uncomfortable to hold the paint box with one hand and try to paint with the other, but, I did it. I'm not quite in the groove yet but it feels close and I am having a great time painting again.

Afternoon in the Valley-2, and A Posthumous Floral -

Daily Paintings,Gurly, AL,Dead Daffodils,Post It Notes

The second of three paintings in the Tennessee Valley. Also a still life/floral from last week that I spent so much time admiring that I forgot to post it. I'm not exactly sure why...but I like this one very much.

Cut Through The Woods -

Daily Landscape Oil Painting, Elk River,Elkton, Tennessee

A most productive weekend of painting. I started out at the Gardner Homestead and then moved down to the river. My dog loved it...no cattle fences or barbed wire and lots of mud to roll around in. This small stream feeds into the Elk River.

Back Porch, Matt Gardner Homestead -

Daily Landscape Oil Painting, Elkton, Tennessee

This is the back porch of the Gardner Homestead. I also painted the front porch last September (click here to see it).

I love the brilliant green of the spring grass.

Stump and Tall Grass

My Easter morning sketch. A large field with hills and a dirt road access. Quiet, private and safe to let my dog wander and explore.
This tree fell in a storm last year, it was cut up, the branches piled, but was never removed...lucky for me.

Hiding in a Good Book -

Daily Still Life Painting, Granny Smith Apple, Aeroplane Boys Book

The book is "The Aeroplane Boys - Among The Clouds or Young Aviators in a Wreck" by John Luther Langworthy (1912). A fun story of 2 boys who design and build an "aeroplane" in the barn. They are persued by suspicious men in a "Touring Car" out to steal their innovative designs.

The apple is a Granny Smith, simple, delicious and colorful.

Honk and Book -

Daily Still Life, Honk Honk Ahoo, Bert Wilson's Fade Away Ball, Tube of Oil Paint

A few of my favorite things. Honk Honk Ashoo, created by my good friend, Ralph Cosentino. Check out this charming character - (here).
The book is from my own collection of kid's books. It is "Bert Wilson's Fadeaway Ball" from 1913 by J.W. Duffield. It is one of a series of "Bert Wilson" stories. Lastly a tube of paint...I have so little time to choose objects to paint and there are always tubes of paint around me and I really like the look of them.

Paint Rock Preserve

This location is a native bird sanctuary in Paint Rock, Alabama. It was a warm but very windy location and I had to keep one hand on the easel to keep it from blowing over. My dog loved bounding through the tall grasses in search of birds and other critters but she didn't find anything to chase. There is an old barn next to the parking area that I will be painting soon.

Morning Across the Valley

Landscape, Daily Painting, oil, Tennessee Valley Morning

My dog and I enjoyed a warm morning and a quiet spot high on a hill behind a country church. I struggled with the paint and she chased birds. How ever many paintings it takes before I get a good one... I'm one closer today!

Three Apples and a Jar -

Daily oil painting still life apples jar

Number three of my "warm up / working out the rust" efforts. Thank you to everyone that has written to encourage and welcome me back. I am enjoying the paints and brushes and looking forward posting something good soon. (I don't dislike these last 3, but I am approaching them more as "warm ups" than anything else.)
