Maddie in Profile -

English Pointer,Dog Portrait,Daily Painting

6x8 oil on canvas panel.
I painted this from a small drawing in my sketchbook. Thankfully Maddie was lounging right next to me while I painted this and that helped provide the information my drawing didn't. I used a limited palette of Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber.

Norman's New England -

Stockbridge,Massachussetts,Norman Rockwell,Studio,Cupola,Weathervane,Daily Painting

6x8 oil on canvas panel.
This 20 minute sketch was painted using one of the photos from my recent trip to CT and MA. This is the roof of Norman Rockwell's studio in Stockbridge, MA. It is one of my favorite places. We used to visit the Rockwell museum and studio often when I lived in Connecticut.

Maddie's Chair -

English Pointer, Upholstered Chair,Daily Painting

10x10 oil on canvas panel.
I purchased this chair at a thrift store when I moved to Dallas. I chose this one because it looked clean and, mostly because I could pick it up (which is important if you are going to have to move furniture by yourself). I got it home, set it in place and sat down on it and, uh oh... it was tiny. The seat cushion is only 16 inches from the floor. I sat on so many chairs at the store. I never noticed that I hadn't sat on this one. It is so uncomfortable that I can't really sit in it for more than a few minutes. Maddie seems to love it though.

Frostville Sunlight - NFS -

Frostville, Ohio, Olivia Dad collaboration,Daily Painting

8x8 oil on canvas panel.
This was the first of the father / daughter collaboration paintings. Livi liked the quirky little addition with the wagon wheel and the plow decorations. She painted a couple of the yellow flowers on the bush.

Edge of the Lake - NFS -

Lake Erie, oil painting, Olivia Dad collaborationDaily Painting

12x12 oil on canvas panel.
Another father / daughter collaboration with paint at Lake Erie (see below) and with clippers (see above).
At first Livi told me not to cut off my hair. She said it was my only asset (only a daughter can get away with that). After cutting her hair, the hospital barber offered to cut mine as well...Livi tearfully said no, her "older sister was a dog groomer and would do it" (again, only a daughter could get away with that!). That night Caroline came over with her dog clippers and cut my hair...Tina just watched and laughed when she wasn't horrified.
Three Daughters!!!

Erie Collaboration - NFS

Olivia's painting, Lake Erie, Daily Painting

12x9 oil on canvas panel.
I am back from a long absense. I spent the month of September in Ohio with my family. My daughter Olivia had a brain surgery that will end her epilepsy related seizures. All went perfectly and she is doing great. We spent the week prior to the surgery together painting and sketching. She would pick the subject and I would paint it and then she would add a brushstroke or two at the end to finish it up. It was a special time that I will always treasure. This is one of the paintings we collaborated on. More to come. Also there are a few from a research trip to southern New England for the project I'm working on.

Texas Street Noon - SOLD

9x12 oil on canvas panel.
Several lunch breaks and a little bit of studio time were needed to fight this battle.
I wish I could say it was the heat or the sweat in my eyes but...
I'll just have to assess the results later, when I have some distance from the struggle.

Dappled Park - SOLD

8x10 oil on masonite panel.
I returned to Central Square Park on Saturday and again on Sunday to finish this painting. The dappled sunlight was a challenge...and trying to stay out of the sun.

Central Square Park - SOLD

8x10 oil on masonite panel.
This is the painting from my demonstration on Wednesday, and then some... I wasn't able to accomplish all I had hoped for, it's really hard to paint and talk so, I invited everyone to come back out to the park on our lunch break today to see the sketch completed. One person did and took some photos and video. I guess the oppressive heat on Wednesday was enough and considering it was actually warmer today, I don't blame them.

Warming Up At Central Square - SOLD

8x10 oil on masonite panel.
I was asked to do a plein air painting demonstration for the Art Department at ReelFX animation studio. I have done demo's before and it can be a little bit nerve wracking. Doing one in front of a group of highly skilled and talented artists had me a little more than anxious and very intimidated. I suggested Central Square Park as a location for its close proximity and to make sure I was off studio property where the group would hopefully be smaller. The demonstration was scheduled for Monday, then moved to Wednesday. I went to the park after work on Tuesday to scout it out and do this "warm up" sketch.
I will post the demo painting tomorrow.

The Last Day Sunflowers - SOLD

6x6 oil on masonite.
They lasted a week and gave me great pleasure. I enjoyed painting them and will be looking for more. This sketch was done very quickly. I was finally through with dinner and phone calls and the baseball game on TV when I began to think about painting. Sixty minutes later I was photographing this painting to post on my blog...UGH, my Time Warner internet was dead. Another hour on the phone and an appointment for Friday between 1-5
!!$#@%^&**!!!!!!!! :>{
I put my jpg file on a flash drive and took it to work with me.

Head On A Plate - SOLD

8x10 oil on a canvas panel.
I found this sculpted head in my file cabinet at work. I brought it home, put it on a paper plate on my work table, turned off all of the lights but one and began painting. I used a pretty minimal palette; Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Cad Yellow Med., Ult. Blue, and a tiny bit of Cad. Red Med. This was a fun exercise.

White Roses

9x7 oil on canvas panel.
Some sketches just don't work. I don't scrape away the duds because I hope to learn from them at a later date...(when I am not so aggravated).
On to the next and hopefully better painting.

As I was arranging the bouquet to paint, I broke these two. I felt guilty and thought I owed it to these casualties to paint them first.

Figure Two

14x11 oil on canvas panel.
This is my second try at painting from the model. Even though this is from the Thursday night figure painting group, it is the same model I painted with the Sunday afternoon group. I feel pretty good about the progress from the first to the second paintings and can clearly see some areas I need to focus on during the next attempt.

Figure One

11x14 oil on canvas panel.
I have been absent from blogging lately but, not from painting. I joined several figure drawing groups and figure painting groups and this is my first attempt with the Sunday painting group. What a struggle! I am determined to continue and hopefully learn and improve along the way.

I made two trips to this location. The painting was ok after the first session but I felt I could improve it with one more go. I think it worked.

The First Biker - SOLD

8x10 oil on canvas board.
By the time I finished this sketch the street was full of motorcycles. They had just opened their brand new back patio and the party was in full swing. I noticed on the drive home that I was humming, "one bourbon, one shot and one beer".

Peaceful Afternoon / SERENITY NOW!

10x10 oil on canvas board.
I had set up my easel and was almost half way through my sketch when a policeman came up behind me. He asked me what I was doing, the easel, the painting, the brush in my hand somehow didn't register with him. As my friend Rick said, "he won't be making Detective anytime soon". Well it seems that I was painting on property belonging to the Meadows Foundation, specifically the Dallas Preservation Society and had to leave. They were closed and I was less than 20 feet from the sidewalk, it didn't matter. I scraped down my incomplete sketch and went home. I needed to calm down and this quiet scene in my apartment did the trick for me.
